The Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, has declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the 2024 Ghanaian presidential election.
Mahama secured a decisive victory with 56.55% of the votes, while his opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 41.61%.
The EC’s declaration is based on results from 267 constituencies. Results from nine constituencies, representing over 947,000 votes, are still outstanding due to unresolved issues. However, the EC has stated that even if all outstanding votes were to go to Bawumia, it would not change the outcome of the election.
Voter turnout for the election was 60.9% across the 267 constituencies. The total number of valid votes cast was 11,191,422, with 239,109 rejected ballots. The total number of votes cast was 11,430,531, out of a total of 18,774,159 registered voters.
The election, which was held on December 7, 2024, was marred by violence in some areas. The violence, attributed to alleged rigging attempts and delays in result collation, resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries. The Ghana Police Service has arrested 89 individuals for various election-related offenses.
The NDC also secured a majority in Parliament. While some parliamentary seats remain contested, the NDC has won enough seats to form a clear majority.
