Ghana is on the brink of a pivotal election. The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) concluded their final rallies on December 5, 2024, each presenting their visions for the country ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The election has become a contest between continuing the current trajectory or pursuing a new direction. Both parties are confident in their platforms and have promised to usher in an era of development and prosperity.
The NPP’s Message of Continuity
At the University of Ghana Sports Complex in Accra, Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, alongside President Nana Akufo-Addo, emphasized the party’s track record over the past eight years. Bawumia highlighted their accomplishments, particularly in problem-solving and transformation.
He specifically cited the Free Senior High School policy as a key achievement, emphasizing its positive impact on educational access and student performance. Bawumia also reinforced the NPP’s commitment to economic stability, youth empowerment, and job creation. He promised to build upon their successes to benefit all Ghanaians.

The NDC’s Call for Change
John Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, rallied his supporters at Zurak Park in Madina. He characterized the election as a defining moment for Ghana, presenting voters with a choice between the current state of affairs and a brighter future.
Mahama stressed that the election was not just another routine event but a chance to choose the kind of Ghana they desired—one marked by opportunity, prosperity, and justice.
He outlined his vision for a more inclusive society that values the voices of young people, ensures equal opportunities for women and girls, and provides workers with decent, well-paying jobs.
Mahama pledged to revitalize the nation, restore hope, and ensure every Ghanaian feels represented in the government.
He directly addressed the electorate’s desire for leadership committed to equity and empowerment, stating that women and girls deserve true equality, safety, and the chance to reach their full potential.

High Stakes and Peaceful Calls
Both rallies drew massive crowds, with party supporters filling the venues, demonstrating their solidarity. The excitement surrounding the events highlighted the significance of Saturday’s election.
Many view the election as a clash of ideologies, with the NPP advocating for continuity and the NDC pushing for change.
Amidst the fervor, both flagbearers concluded their rallies by urging their supporters to maintain peace during the election. They called for vigilance while remaining calm as they exercised their right to vote. The outcome of this election will undoubtedly shape the future of Ghana, setting the stage for the country’s next chapter.
